In the last month I have mostly been:  writing, singing, and playing guitar just for the love of it.  For the rest of the time I have been sifting thru the music I recorded from Feb to May and panning for gold.  In the last week I have started bearing down on more specific pieces and developing them.  The stuff is sounding good to me.  Better than it ever has.  It is coming easily.  I am one contented monkey.

Maybe the reason things are going so well is:  I have sacrificed my sleep patterns to the Almighty Gods of Sound.

They are All. Over. The. Place.

Until recently I’ve been getting up late then working till 5 or 6 a.m.  The last couple of days this has flipped and I am now getting up around 2:30 a.m. to start my day.  I am aware that this sounds CrazyBalls.  I have stopped questioning it.  When I wake up I start work.  When I get hungry I eat. When I get tired I lie down.

I also sewed together another baby Frankenstein.  (If this sentence confuses you, then read the first post I did about Sketchbooks (here) before you report me to whoever you were thinking of reporting me to.)

After hearing the last one a lot of people asked me how I was selecting the pieces.  Were they my best stuff?  Was this the stuff that will be on the album?  Etc.

The truth is I just: pick moments I like, and then cut them out and string them together in a way that pleases me.  It’s that simple.  I am fairly sure none of these recordings will make it anywhere near the album, but some of the ideas will for sure.  A piece of melody, a chord change or a textural thing, stuff like that.  But, mostly I think that this is the only hearing these little guys will ever get.  They are like a bunch of cool little aliens in a box, who will live in the vault forever, never getting to go out into the world.

Today is their day in the sun.

This is a part of the musical process that folk don’t usually get to hear, unless they are super-close to the musician.  It’s a way of letting you guys in on what I am working on.

And it’s good to share, y’all.

My name is James Radcliffe and I am a 100% audience supported independent artist.  If you like what I do (and can afford it) then please consider buying some of my music.  Each purchase really makes a big difference to me and 10% of every sale goes to a charity which: houses, feeds, clothes, and educates orphaned children in Nepal.

Also, every month I send out a newsletter packed with Interesting and Exclusive Things.  If you sign up today you’ll also get 3 FREE tracks of my music as a welcome gift.

  1. I recently acquiesced to my natural rhythms as well. I’m hyper alert during Nautical Twilight, that period between just being able to make out shapes in the dark and the moment the sun’s crepuscular rays slice the horizon.

It works out physically as well considering I’m currently highly allergic to any temperature over 63 F. I melt like dark chocolate above 75. Summer is hell. sunscreen can suck it.

But if I wake up before everybody else and lace up my shoes in the dark, the cool, quiet, humid roads are MINE.
